Driver Verification to

Spot Fake Licenses

Driver verification tells you whether a driver's license is real and belongs to the person holding it. Authenticate scores the license's authenticity and matches a live selfie to its photo. After signup, it re-checks that face to see whether the verified driver is still on the account.

How Driver Verification Works on Authenticate

Driver's License Verification at Signup

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) notes that a license can be counterfeit or altered, so at signup Authenticate reads both sides and checks the decoded barcode against the printed front. It then returns a confidence score that the license is authentic, for your team to review.

Re-Verify Drivers to Catch Account Renting

A driver you verified can rent the account to someone you never checked. In a May 12, 2026 investigation, CBS News California found Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash accounts advertised for rent on Facebook Marketplace and Instagram, and one seller allegedly said that not having a driver's license was "no problem." ReAuthenticate™ looks for that handover by asking for a selfie at the moments you choose and comparing it with the face from signup.

Coming Soon to Driver Verification

Today you can check the license, match it to the driver's face, and run a separate motor vehicle record (MVR) check for license status. That MVR check runs under terms that bar its use for any FCRA purpose. The items below are on the roadmap, and the first brings that status check inside the verification flow.

  • Coming soon

    Real-Time Driver's License Status Checks

Check a US driver's license's current status in real time, inside the verification flow.

  • Coming soon

    AAMVA Data Verification

Verify driver's license data against issuing-agency records through AAMVA's data verification service.

  • Coming soon

Mobile Driver's Licenses & Digital Credentials

  • Coming soon

    Device Fingerprinting & Biometrics

Recognize a returning phone from its device characteristics, alongside biometric signals.

Driver Verification in Three Steps

The first two steps run once, at signup, and a signup check covers only the day it ran. The third runs again whenever your rules call for it, for as long as the driver keeps the account.

Capture the License icon

Capture the License

The driver photographs both sides of their license in your app through the iOS or Android SDK, or in a browser through the Web SDK or a verification link. If you'd rather not build the capture, Medallion, Authenticate's no-code flow, runs it in 38 languages.

Match the Selfie icon

Match the Selfie

The driver takes a live selfie, which is checked for liveness and compared with the license photo. That comparison looks for a borrowed or stolen license, which can pass a document check when the card is real.

Re-Verify on Your Schedule

On any trigger you set, ReAuthenticate™ takes a new selfie and checks it against the face from signup. A driver who doesn't match is asked for a government photo ID, and a person on your team reviews that result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers on license checks, account renting, failed checks, FCRA, and pricing.

What is driver verification?

Accordion Icon

Driver verification confirms that the person signing up to drive on your rideshare, delivery, or other gig platform holds a genuine driver's license and is the person pictured on it. A verified account can change hands later, so driver verification also re-checks that the same person is still using it. For US drivers, you can add KBA (Knowledge Based Authentication) or an SSN check, which matches the number to the driver's name and date of birth.

How do you verify a driver's license is real?

Accordion Icon

To verify a driver's license is real, check that the printed front matches the PDF417 barcode on the back, that the document shows no signs of alteration, and that the person presenting it matches the photo. Authenticate's document check returns the license details with a confidence score that the document is authentic. AAMVA's Driver's License Data Verification (DLDV) service goes a step further and checks license data against issuing-agency records, which Authenticate lists as coming soon.

How do rideshare and delivery apps verify drivers?

Accordion Icon

Rideshare and delivery apps verify drivers in layers, at signup and again later. Uber's October 16, 2025 newsroom post lists a photo ID, a valid Social Security number, document checks, and a background check at signup. After that come Real-Time ID Check selfies, matched to the verified profile photo at varying times so drivers can't predict them. Authenticate covers the identity layers in that list: license authenticity, selfie face match, SSN verification, and ReAuthenticate™ selfie re-checks.

How do you stop drivers from renting or sharing accounts?

Accordion Icon

To stop drivers from renting or sharing accounts, re-check the face after signup, when a different person is most likely to be driving. Ask at shift start, at a sign-in on a new phone, after a login from a new city, or before a payout change. ReAuthenticate™ runs each of those re-checks with one selfie, compared with the face verified at signup.

What happens when a driver fails a verification check?

Accordion Icon

When a driver fails a verification check at signup, Authenticate returns the result with the scores behind it: a confidence score that the license is authentic and a face-match score. A failed re-check makes ReAuthenticate™ ask the driver for a government photo ID. Treat all of it as a flag for your team to review, because a real driver photographed in poor light can fail a face match.

Does driver verification include an MVR or background check?

Accordion Icon

Driver verification on Authenticate confirms identity, meaning the license is genuine and the person presenting it is its owner. The verification itself does not pull a motor vehicle record (MVR) or criminal history. Authenticate is not a consumer reporting agency, and its data may not be used as a factor in eligibility for employment, credit, insurance, or any other FCRA purpose. Talk to your counsel and the Authenticate team before any Authenticate result plays a part in a driver decision.

What is the difference between driver verification and a driver's license status check?

Accordion Icon

Driver verification checks that a license is genuine and belongs to the person presenting it. A driver's license status check tells you whether that license is currently valid, suspended, or revoked. Authenticate's motor vehicle record (MVR) check returns license status today, as a separate check under terms that bar its use for any FCRA purpose. A real-time status check inside the driver verification flow is listed as coming soon.

How much does driver verification cost?

Accordion Icon

Driver verification on Authenticate costs one paid government ID check of the driver's license, with Liveness & Face Match included. An SSN check or KBA for US drivers is a separate paid check. ReAuthenticate™ re-checks after that first verification are free, so checking for account renting as often as your rules call for adds no per-check cost. You start with a $100 activation fee that becomes credit toward usage. Credits never expire, and there are no contracts or minimums.

Verify Your Driver Network

Start with the drivers already on your platform. Any driver Authenticate hasn't verified needs one government ID and selfie verification first, and after that, every ReAuthenticate™ re-check for that driver is free.
